Etymology: Gastromyzon: Greek, gaster = stomach + Greek, myzo = to suckle (Ref. 45335);  umbrus: From the Latin adjective umbra, meaning shade or shadow, in allusion to the dusky body coloration; also to the shadow cast on the throat area by the chin (the basins where this species occurs is at the throat region) of the Hog's head of Borneo island..

Can be distinguished from other species of the genus by possessing the following unique combination of characters: gill slit angular; subopercular groove present and continuous to pectoral fin origin; body dark brown; head dorsum dark brown; sublacrymal groove present; a rounded snout when viewed dorsally; secondary rostrum absent; post-oral pouch absent; abdomen without scales; lateral line scales 50-52; pelvic fin overlapping anal fin origin, adpressed dorsal fin overlapping level of anal fin origin (Ref. 57871).
