Western Central Pacific: Sarawak, Malaysia and western coast of Kalimantan, Indonesia. Also known from two specimens from Phuket, Thailand.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 0; Anale stekels: 0; Anale zachte stralen: 80. Body tapering, belly rounded before pelvic fins, with 14 to 16 + 31 to 39 = 47 to 54 keeled scutes from isthmus to anus. Maxilla long, reaching to beyond pectoral fin base. Pectoral fin with 6 filaments; the unbranched fin rays longer than those of pelvic fin.
Body shape (shape guide): elongated; Cross section: compressed.
Presumably estuarine, like other Coilia species, but more data needed. Found in estuaries and tidal reaches of river (Ref. 12693). Marketed fresh, dried, dried-salted, or made into fish sauce or fish balls (Ref. 9822).
