Etymology: Malapterurus: Greek, mala = a lot of + Greek, pteron = fin + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335); barbatus: From the Latin "barbatus" = bearded, in reference to the dusky underside of the head typical of this species (Ref. 44050).
