Etymology: Placidochromis: Latin, placidus = of peaceful or tranquile appearance + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); nkhotakotae: Named after its type locality, Nkhotakota (Malawi) (Ref. 55898).
Eponymy: This is a toponym referring to Nkhotakota, a port on Lake Malawi, Malawi; the only known area of the cichlid’s occurrence. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
