Diagnosed from congeners in the Adriatic basin by the possession of the following characters: origin of anal fin below branched dorsal rays 4-8; anal fin with 13-16½ branched rays; lateral line with 40-47 + 3 scales; 16-22 gill rakers; ventral keel exposed or partly or completely scaled; lateral stripe faint in life, very prominent in preserved individuals; pectoral fin not reaching pelvic base; and mouth slightly superior (Ref. 59043).
Occurs in open surface waters in a variety of habitats ranging from large subalpine lakes to small, lowland streams. Feeds on plankton, insects and invertebrates. Spawns in shallow riffles or along stony shores of lakes, occasionally above submerged vegetation (Ref. 59043).
