Tia mềm vây hậu môn: 167 - 195. Unique among species of Steatogenys in having very large maximum body size (length to end of anal fin 32 cm); distinct round or oval spot on pectoral-fin base, approximately 1.5 eye widths in diameter; irregular dark blotches on pectoral fin forming a distinct mottled pattern; 15 pectoral-fin rays; relatively many scales over lateral (8-10); relatively many pored lateral line scales to end of anal fin (97-103); relatively few bands on body (6-7) and relatively short caudal appendage in intact specimens (11.4-29.6% TL) (Ref. 51263).
