Etymology: Nannocharax: Latin, nannus = small + Greek, charax = a marine fish without identification (Ref. 45335); reidi: Named in honor of the collector of the specimens that served as the basis of the description, Dr. Gordon McGregor Reid, of the North of England Zoological Society, who first reported that these samples might represent an undescribed form (Ref. 54201).

Diagnosis: 46-48 (Ref. 81638) or 47-49 (Ref. 54201) lateral line scales. 6-8 anal fin branched rays; tip of pelvic fin falling short of, or barely extending to rear of, vent; dark pigmentation on body in form of broad bars or with overall dark pigmentation; adipose fin pigmented to at least some degree; completely dark in some larger individuals (Ref. 81638).
