Etymology: Speonectes: Name from Greek 'speos' meaning a cave, cavern, grot) and 'nectes' for 'a swimmer'; referring to the cave habitat of the only known species of the genus.

Asia: granitic cave in Gunung Kajang, Tioman Island, Malaysia. Reportedly most related to Sundoreonectes obesus from east and south Kalimantan and Sarawak; no other loaches were found in the island.
