Etymology: Stegastes: Greek, stegastos, -e, -on = covered (Ref. 45335); lubbocki: The species is named lubbocki in memory of Or Roger Lubbock, the collector of the type material. Juveniles have been observed cleaning many other fish species (Ref. 98447).

Derived from family: Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
