Etymology: Badis: 'badis' is presumably a Bengali local name, possibly derived from 'bhedo' or 'bheda', but it lacks a proper reference. Probably incorrect etymology (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers).

Spine dorsali (totale) : 16 - 18; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 7 - 9; Raggi anali molli: 6 - 8; Vertebre: 26 - 28. Possesses a dark blotch on the dorsolateral aspect of the caudal peduncle. Postorbital stripe angled. Caudal peduncle blotch small and confined to side of caudal peduncle. Adults possess black spots arranged in prominent horizontal rows along the side. Caudal fin base with 3 indistinct dark blotches. Scales in lateral low 25-26 (Ref. 46238).
