Etymology: Maylandia: In honour of Hans J. Mayland, German ictiologist (Ref. 45335); estherae: Named after Mrs. Esther Grant of Salima, Malawi who was instrumental in the renewed opening up of the Mozambique waters for the collection of ornamental fishes (Ref. 40897).
