Etymology: Potamotrygon: Greek, potamos = river + Greek, trygon = a sting ray (Ref. 45335).
Issue
This species may be synonymous with Potamotrygon motoro (Müller & Henle, 1841), and is tentatively accepted as valid on the basis of a single specimen from the Pedreira river that differs slightly in coloration, following Rosa (1985a). Reproductive biology unknown. Additional reference: Compagno & Cook (1995).
