Western Pacific: Andaman Sea in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to Palau, south to the southern Great Barrier Reef. Recently recorded from Tonga (Ref. 53797).

Adults inhabit coral-rich areas of seaward reef slopes and deep lagoons (Ref. 9710). Feed on zooplankton a short distance from the bottom. Usually seen solitary on mixed coral and rubble patches (Ref. 48636). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699).
