Etymology: Pyrrhulina: Greek, pyrrhos = red, with the colour of the fire (Ref. 45335).

Issue
P. obermülleri is a handsome relative of P. brevis with much red on the fins and body and a dark horizontal band across the body. Marilyn Weitzman, pers. comm., Eschmeyer, 1998:1210; Ortega and Vari, 1986:11. [= Pyrrhulina brevis lugubris, Géry, 1977:138; Lüling, 1979:296].
