The species Oreonectes translucens is valid and not a synonym of this species according to Romero et al. (2009) but we need to wait that their paper is validly published.

Distinguished from all other species of the genus by having the following combination of characters: eyes absent; snout pointed; tubular flap of anterior nostril elongated into barbel-like structure, posterior nostril borders anterior one. Long and narrow pectoral fin, almost extending to pelvic-fin origin; pelvic fin reaching slightly beyond anus; caudal peduncle with developed caudal-adipose keel; body entirely lacking scales and color; dorsal fin with 8 branched rays; anal fin with 6 branched rays; pelvic fin with 6 branched rays and caudal fin with 16 branched rays (Ref. 75196).
