Distinguished from congeners in central Scotland by having overall claret color in breeding season often with dark fins and orange-pink spots and oval mouth when open. Additional characters useful for identification include absence of parr marks and body fusiform (Ref. 59043).
Found in the pelagic zone of fjord-like lakes, usually less than 20 m below surface. Feeds on zooplankton, especially Cladocera, Daphnia. Spawns on gravels along shelving shores of lakes (Ref. 59043).
