Distinguished from its congeners in British Isles by having the following combination of characters: body and fins golden brown to yellow, possessing many black spots; many large vivid orange-red spots, especially on and below the lateral line; body depth about 3.3-3.8 times in SL (Ref. 59043).
Inhabits lakes in shallow areas. Feeds mainly on snails and trichopteran larvae, supplemented by other benthic invertebrates. Spawns near or in lake outlet. Spawning may also occur on sandy bays in middle region of northern shore. Attains a maximum size of about 36 cm SL (Ref. 59043).
