Inhabits creeks and brooks of low to moderate velocity and sometimes is found in brackish tidelands. Found in brackish and freshwater between 0 and 15 m elevation. Forms schools in shallow waters and is also syntopic with P. turrubarensis. Insectivorous and eat many hymenoptera (Ref. 36880). Occurs along with other livebearers such as Poeciliopsis elongata and Neoheterandria tridentiger in mangrove swamps.
