Lacustrine, in open waters (Ref. 59043). Feeds on bottom invertebrates and on semi-pelagic crustaceans (Mysis relicta), and also on their own eggs (Ref. 6258).
Status of threat: Threatened by eutrophication, introductions and warming of lakes. Only remaining abundant population in Lough Neagh (Ref. 59043).
Spawning takes place in the lakes, over beds of gravel or stones in relatively shallow waters. The eggs fall into spaces between the stones.
