Asia: endemic to the Jordan River drainage basin, where it is widely distributed in lakes and most tributaries. In the coastal plain of Palestine it occurs only in the Nahr al-Muqatta (Qishon River).

Espinas dorsales (total) : 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 10; Espinas anales: 0; Radios blandos anales: 12 - 16. Elongate and compressed body. Mouth sub terminal, its cleft reaching to below the nostrils. Pharyngeal teeth 5-5, smooth and hooked.

Found near the bottom of lakes, ponds and streams of slow-flowing water. Spawning season: January to April.
