North America: upper Rio Grande (above El Paso, Texas), Texas and New Mexico and in the Pecos River, New Mexico, USA. Has disappeared over much of its former range, apparently due to reduced water levels in the Rio Grande system (Ref. 3881).

Adults inhabit the main channels of the Rio Grande and Pecos River usually over sand or gravel. With two subspecies: N. s. simus known from Rio Grande above El Paso, Texas, but now possibly extinct; N. s. pecosensis known only in the Pecos River, New Mexico, recognized as a threatened subspecies (Ref. 5723).
