Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335);  buchanani: Named after the former president of Arkansas Industrial University, Dr. J. L. Buchanan (Ref. 10294).
