Issue
There is confusion in the literature regarding the identity of this species; Steindachner (1876) noted that it might be P. laeta (Cope, 1871). However P. semifasciata has a distinctive narrow black stripe extending across the head and onto the body almost to the dorsal fin, whereas on what remains of the type of P. laeta the black stripe ends just behind the head.
