Etymology: Polyspondylogobius: Greek, poly = a lot of + Greek, spondylos = vertebra + latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335); sinensis: From the old name for China. Polyspondylogobius comes from the Greek term "poly" for many, and "spondylos" for vertebra, which refer to the uniquely numerous vertebrae of the species.

Espinhos dorsais (total) : 4; Raios dorsais (total) : 31 - 34; Espinhos anais: 1; Raios anais : 18 - 20. Live specimens semi-transparent. Preserved specimens brownish or yellowish, pale ventrally; middle of caudal fin with short grey band; fin membranes translucent.
Mainly found in brackish water, river mouths and tidal pools, but also near the bottom in shallow, sandy bays.
