Spine dorsali (totale) : 14 - 16; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 9 - 11; Spine anali: 1; Raggi anali molli: 17. Pectoral-fin rays 15-16, at least some branched; caudal peduncle with distinct dark bar or marking; body with well defined vertical or oblique dark bars; pored lateral-line scales 13-16 (usually 15-16); anal fin rays 17; body bars oblique; second dorsal fin without black spot; caudal peduncle bar narrow, lying at base of caudal peduncle; anal fin with 6-7 dark basal spots, which are dark blue in life.
Adults are found in various reef habitats to about 15 m depth. Usually seen resting on corals (Ref. 48636) or on rocks (Ref. 90102). Eggs are hemispherical and covered with numerous sticky threads that anchor them in the algae on the nesting sites (Ref. 240). Larvae are planktonic which occur primarily in shallow, nearshore waters (Ref. 94114).
