Indo-Pacific: East Africa to Marshall Islands, north to southern Japan, south to the Great Barrier Reef and Tonga.

Épines dorsales (Total) : 9; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 11; Épines anales: 3; Rayons mous anaux: 11. Greenish with pink markings on dark substrate. Very pale when on white sand substrates and dorsal spots is lost in large males (Ref. 48636).
Adults inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs to over 15 m (Ref. 9710) and nearby sand-rubble bottoms at 2-30 m, solitarily or in small groups (Ref. 90102). Food consist of small crabs and gastropods.
