Belongs to the pogonognathus - group which differs from Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus and the other species of Hemirhamphodon in having 1 two distinct sizes of melanophores in the dorsal fin, large and small. Resembles species of the phaiosoma -group but differs sharply from H. pogonognathus in having a continuous band of pigment extending from the distal part of the fin to its base (Ref. 26761).
Females bear live young (Ref. 58777).
