Etymology: Occella: Latin, diminutive, ocellus, oculus = eye (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Masunosuke Kazawa of Sapporo was a graduate student at Stanford University. According to the etymology, he was “…engaged in the study of the fishes of the Hokkaido.” We have been unable to identify him further. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Espinhos dorsais (total) : 13 - 15; Raios dorsais (total) : 6 - 9; Espinhos anais: 0; Raios anais : 23 - 27. Differs from other species of Ocella in having large and small subpectoral plates, 3 blackish -brown bands on pectoral fin, 43 or more lateral line plates, 13 to 15 dorsal spines and 15 to 16 anal fin rays.
