Etymology: Cottus: Greek, kottos = a fish (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: One of the ‘heavenly twins’ in Greek mythology (see also Castor). The etymology is not explicit, but apparently so named because the author viewed this species as a ‘twin’ to Cottus gobio. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
