背棘 (总数) : 16 - 17; 背的软条 (总数) : 9 - 11; 臀棘: 3; 臀鳍软条: 9 - 10; 脊椎骨: 31. The strongly marked longitudinal lateral stripes and the tricuspid teeth of the outer rows separate P. triaenodon from all other species of the genus. The color pattern is particularly distinctive in the specimens.
