Etymology: Hyporhamphus: Greek, hypo = under + Greek, rhamphos = beak, bill (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Yuri Alexandrovich Rudjakov (d: 1938) is a researcher of suprabenthic plankton. He took part in cruises to Nazca and Sala y Gomez ridges, Eastern South Pacific, where this species can be found. (Also see Yuri (Rudjakov)) (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Upper jaw longer than in Hyporhamphus balinensis and Hyporhamphus affinis, its length almost equal to its width; vertebrae 58 or more; preorbital bone 1.1-1.6 times in diameter of orbit.
