Etymology: Parambassis: Greek, para = near + Greek, ambassis, anabasis = climbing up (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: J Wolff, who collected the holotypes of these species, was a military doctor and one of Bleeker’s circle of friends who sent him fish specimens. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Body shape (shape guide): short and / or deep.
Found in main rivers and lakes (Ref. 56749). Occurs in sluggish rivers and floodplains. Grows to a fairly large size and is probably the most common species of this family, seen in the markets. Feeds on insects, crustaceans, and small fish (Ref. 12693). Used as feeds for caged fishes (Ref. 56749).
