Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11 - 12; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 11. Upper preopercular spine long, nearly reaching to near margin of opercle. Preorbital spine slight, often lacking. Infraorbital ridge usually smooth over anterior 1/4 of eye. Suborbital ridge bearing 3-4 spines behind eye. Interopercular flap absent. Iris lappet simple.
