Asia and Oceania: known only from China, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Reported from New Caledonia (Ref. 13235).

Preorbital width about equal to, or slightly narrower than eye diameter. Preopercular notch and knob poorly developed. Scale rows on back rising parallel to lateral line. Back and sides grayish-brown or olive, becoming whitish on belly. A prominent black blotch on the lateral line below the anterior soft dorsal-fin rays. Juveniles with a series of diffuse blackish bars on sides.
Adults inhabit freshwater streams and brackish, mangrove-lined estuaries. Juveniles upstream (Ref. 48635). Not reported from purely marine habitats.
