Etymology: Malapterurus: Greek, mala = a lot of + Greek, pteron = fin + Greek, oura = tail (Ref. 45335); minjiriya: "Minjiriya" is the Hausa word for the species, easily distinguished from the sympatric M. electricus by Niger River fishermen (Ref. 44050).

Spotting and blotching concentrated posteriad; caudal and anal fins unmarked or lightly spotted; paired fins rarely spotted (Ref. 44050).

體色 顏色類似 M. electricus, 但是更細與比較稀疏的有斑點的, 藉由偶鰭非有斑點的; 小的標本 (<80 mm SL) 有長的蔭涼處的鞍狀斑顏色略深的超過底色, 從尾鰭基底到脂鰭的前端延伸, 沒有灰白的間隙; 鞍狀斑延伸到脂鰭, 有一個灰白的末梢部的邊緣; 在稚魚的臀鰭與尾鰭設定暗色的條紋外海的藉著灰白基底, 與清澈的末梢部的邊緣而且有在側面與背面上的分散斑點與斑塊 (向上到好幾次眼直徑), 但是不在鰭上.(參考文獻 44050)
Largest specimen encountered in museum collections was 320mm SL; Sagua (1987) reported sizes up to 510 mm SL (Ref. 57130).
