The most recent reference to distribution is by Weitzman & Weitzman (1982), but due to a printer’s error Fig. 22.10 provides the correct distribution for Nannostomus trifasciatus, not Fig. 22.11. The most recent systematic description by Weitzman (1966). Weitzman et al. (2001) most recently discussed the geographical forms of this species.including a newly discovered form from Peru called the coral red pencilfish.
