Labeo kibimbi is a valid species according to Ref. 26192; if accepted L. degeni does not occur in Lake Tanganyika.

Africa: lectotype and paralectotype locality of Labeo degeni: "Kinshasa, near the rapids" (Ref. 26192). Distribution of this species in the Congo basin as given in Ref. 26192, with reports from the marine lower Congo, Kasai, Ubangi, Wagenia Falls and upper Lualaba, is questionable.
