Africa: Sanaga basin in Cameroon to the Chiloango drainage in Republic of the Congo (Ref. 81639) and Angola (Cabinda)(Ref. 120641), including the basins of the Ntem, Nyong, Ogooué, Nyanga and Kouilou-Niari (Ref. 81639). Reported from the rivers Dja and Ngoko (Ref. 51193) and Alima (Ref. 42035)(middle Congo River basin), but this is not confirmed in Ref. 81639, which considers this species to be a Lower Guinea endemic.

Diagnosis: mouth subinferior; two pairs of equally long barbels; 22-26 scales in lateral line; 12 circumpeduncular scales; last simple ray of dorsal fin heavily ossified and serrated; no trace of striping or spotting on sides (Ref. 81639).
