Africa: Kouilou-Niari (Ref. 53765) and Chiloango River basins (Ref. 41597). Report from the Ubangi River (middle Congo River basin) (Ref. 94857) questionable and needs confirmation. Presence in some swamps and minor tributaries of the Congo River estuary tentatively confirmed (Ref. 12818).

背棘 (總數) : 0; 背的軟條 (總數) : 18 - 21; 臀棘: 0; 臀鰭軟條: 26 - 28. Petrocephalus haullevillii is distinguished from P. congicus by the absence of a rosette of electroreceptor organs above the eye (Ref. 91771). Teeth bicuspid, 11-14 in upper jaw and 16-18 in lower jaw (Ref. 41597).
