Etymology: Nothobranchius: Greek, nothos = false + Greek, brangchia = gill (Ref. 45335); hassoni: The species is named in honour of Michel Hasson, for his assistance to obtain the type specimens, additional information and for his support to help the National Park of Upemba (Ref. 53530).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15 - 17; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 15 - 17. Deep bodied Nothobranchius (Ref. 53530). The snout is rounded (Ref. 53530). The mouth is terminal, directed upward (Ref. 53530). Ctenii are absent on the rays of the dorsal and anal fins (Ref. 53530). Number of scales on the median longitudinal line is 26-30 and 2-4 on caudal fin base (Ref. 53530). Most scales have a shallow pit in the centre, not connected with an underlying neuromast system (Ref. 53530); there are no ctenii on the body scales (Ref. 53530).
Inhabits ephemeral pools with turbid water (Ref. 53530).
