Etymology: Bodianus: Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896).; unimaculatus: Name from Latin unus for one, and macula for spot; referring to the prominent black spot usually present in the dorsal fin of this species (Ref. 75973).

Marine; reef-associated; depth range 0 - 60 m (Ref. 89444). Temperate
Southwest Pacific: Australia (southern Queensland to Victoria) and New Zealand. Also Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and the Kermadec Islands (Ref. 8879). Previously confused with Bodianus vulpinus, a West Australian endemic, Bodianus oxycephalus from Japan, and other similar species at Easter Island and Hawaii.
