Freshwater; benthopelagic. Tropical
Africa: drainage basins of Lakes Kivu, Edward and Tanganyika, both in tributaries and in lakes (Ref. 2801), also Lake Rukwa (Ref. 107916). In Democratic Republic of the Congo also collected at Pinga (Lualaba, upper Congo River basin) (Ref. 12818). Reports from the Ituri drainage (middle Congo River basin) (Ref. 82705) based on misidentified E. trinotatus (Ref. 106290).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 8; Anal soft rays: 5 - 6. Last unbranched ray of dorsal fin thorny with posterior serration; anterior barbels well developed, mostly reaching over anterior side of operculum (Ref. 27628). Dorsal side of body brown-green colored, ventral side silver; unpaired fins are brown-yellow, paired fins uncolored; sometimes a darker lateral line can be seen on adults, replaced by spots in young (Ref. 27628).
Maximum TL was recorded at 11.5 cm (Ref. 2801).
