Freshwater; demersal. Tropical; 18°C - 25°C (Ref. 13371)
Asia: discontinuous distribution in mainland and insular southeast Asia: Chao Phraya and Mekong basins; islands of Sumatra and Borneo (Ref. 10429). Reported from the river systems of Maeklong, Peninsular and Southeast Thailand (Ref. 26336).

Second anal spine conspicuously enlarged (Ref. 43281).
Found in main rivers and lakes (Ref. 56749). Occurs in sluggish rivers and floodplains. Grows to a fairly large size and is probably the most common species of this family, seen in the markets. Feeds on insects, crustaceans, and small fish (Ref. 12693). Used as feeds for caged fishes (Ref. 56749).
