Western Pacific: Philippines, Ryukyu Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Caroline Islands, and Marshall Islands. Reported from Indonesia (Ref. 8631), Australia, including the northwestern region (Ref. 9710), China and Taiwan (Ref. 31517).

Has elongate gold-centered dark markings both on the head and vertically on the lower sides of the body (Ref. 1602); further characterized by pale grey body color; large dark brown spots and scattered smaller spots on body; belly and ventral body above anal fin with vertical orange lines; oblique orange bands on head; base of upper pectoral fin with small white spot, larger spot on basal part of fin; longitudinal scale series 48-56; opening of gill extending slightly anterior to vertical at posterior edge of preopercle; greatest depth of body 4.7-5.5 in SL; longer caudal fin compared to head length; fifth and sixth branched caudal rays slightly prolonged as filaments (Ref. 90102).
Found on sandy lagoon bottoms (Ref. 9710). Inhabits coastal sand slopes in rubble patches on reef crests, usually on dark substrates to about 20 meters depth (Ref. 48637).
