Etymology: fortispina: Name 'fortispina' from the Latin words 'fortis' and 'spina', meaning 'strong' and 'spine', in reference to the robust predorsal spine of the new species.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal soft rays: 25 - 32; Vertebrae: 30 - 31. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: scale rows around the caudal peduncle 15-18; branched dorsal-fin rays 9; comparatively robust, thick, broad, and downward curved predorsal spine; scale rows between the lateral line and dorsal-fin origin 8-10; and comparatively elongated predorsal spine 4.3-5.5 (Ref. 137756).
