Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); hexagonarostris: Name 'hexagonarostris' from the Latin words 'hexagonum' and '‘rostrum (rostris)', meaning 'six-sided figure or shape' and 'beak’ or ‘bill', in reference to the hexagon-shaped proboscis.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 32. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: a transverse lobe with 13-35 small- to medium sized conical tubercles; a prominent, unilobed, hexagon-shaped proboscis with five large-sized conical acanthoid tubercles on anterior margin and three or four medium-sized conical acanthoid tubercles on anteroventral marginal aspect; lateral surface of snout swollen with 8-18 small tubercles; depressed rostral surface of snout flat and creased; 28-29 + 3 = 31-32 lateral-line scales; 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays; 5½ branched anal-fin rays; lack of labella (Ref. 132498).
