Elasmobranchii (sharks and rays) >
Rajiformes (Skates and rays) >
Rajidae (Skates)
Etymology: Amblyraja: Greek, amblys = darkness + Latin, raja, -ae = ray (Raja sp.) (Ref. 45335).
Issue
Possibly a junior synonym of A. hyperborea due to strong morphological similarity according to Ebert & Stehmann (2013, Ref. 98315) and Weigmann (2016, Ref. 118749) (Ref. 118749).
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Ecology
Marine; bathydemersal; depth range 600 - 2610 m (Ref. 114953). Deep-water; 30°S - 50°S, 78°W - 51°W (Ref. 114953)
Southwest Atlantic: off the mouth of Río de la Plata, Argentina (Ref. 26282, Ref. 114953) and Uruguay (Ref. 58839, Ref. 114953). Possibly Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 27540, Ref. 114953).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 91.0 cm TL male/unsexed; (Ref. 114953)
Found on continental slope and upper abyssal plain. Feeds on small benthic invertebrates, adults possibly piscivorous (Ref. 114953). Oviparous (Ref. 50449). Males reaches maturity by ca. 76 cm TL; young hatch at ca. 22 cm TL (Ref. 114953). Produces horny-shelled eggs (Ref. 205).
Life cycle and mating behavior
Maturities | Reproduction | Spawnings | Egg(s) | Fecundities | Larvae
Oviparous, paired eggs are laid. Embryos feed solely on yolk (Ref. 50449). Eggs have horn-like projections on the shell (Ref. 205).
