Etymology: Potamotrygon: Greek, potamos = river + Greek, trygon = a sting ray (Ref. 45335).

Issue
Spelled Potamotrygon schuhmacheri in the title of the original descriprion, but Potamotrygon schühmacheri in the text, and wrongly emended by Taniuchi (1982) to Potamotrygon schuemacheri. Reproductive biology unknown. Additional reference: Compagno & Cook (1995). Possibly a junior synonym of P. histrix.
