Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Characterized by having kidney-shaped black throat mark; dorsal and caudal transverse bars present; spotted opercle; opercle with black lower margin; subdorsal scale, mode 6 ½; postdorsal scales, mode12; anal fin rays, mode 29; and lateral scales, mode 31 (Ref. 56386).
