Teleostei (teleosts) > Cypriniformes (Carps) > Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps) > Labeoninae
Etymology: Labeo: Latin, labeo = one who has large lips (Ref. 45335).
More on author: Linnaeus.

Issue
According to Fricke (2008: Ref. 83466) and Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870), this species has been wrongly named Labeo niloticus (Forsskål, 1775) for a long time, and should be named Labeo vulgaris Haeckel, 1847. This needs further evidence and we keep Labeo niloticus but with the authorship as (Linnaeus, 1758) until the case is fixed.

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00776 (0.00405 - 0.01487), b=3.02 (2.86 - 3.18), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this species & Genus-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.5   ±0.28 se; based on food items.
Generation time: 2.7 ( na - na) years. Estimated as median ln(3)/K based on 2 growth studies.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low to moderate vulnerability (32 of 100).
